Paul and I camped on cockatoo island last weekend, a highly recommended weekend excursion! We arrived Friday night and with few punters booked in for the night, managed to get a prime water-front spot well away from other campers, and then enjoyed a few sundowners watching the fri night social sailors and the frequent passing of the rivercats.
Saturday = exploration day. We decided to fork out $5 each for the audio tour to find out a bit more about the island and its interesting history from convict gaol (built of course by the convicts themselves), to a reform school for wayward girls, and later to the largest dockyards in the southern hemisphere in WWII.
Many of the island's buildings and structures are being restored to preserve the historical significance of the place. Old machine parts are displayed as sculptures, many of the islands cranes are still standing and provide some pretty cool photo opportunities with the beautiful Sydney skyline behind.
The island is well worth a visit and if camping - head over on the Friday night (or go mid-week!), as the campsite appears to be pretty popular with families with kids on Saturdays, thus the BBQs are in high demand.
We headed back to the mainland on Sunday after another breakkie from the Muster Cafe happy after a lovely weekend. Definitely tempted to make a return visit for another relaxing weekend in the heart of the city!
